The Group Chairman of Roofings Group of Companies, Dr. Sikander Lalani, has said the company shares a strong passion for education and community development, noting that the project reflects Roofings Group’s commitment to giving back to society and investing in future generations through improved education infrastructure.
He made the remarks on Friday as he joined officials from Kampala Capital City Authority to break ground for the reconstruction of Kasubi Family Primary School in Rubaga Division, marking the beginning of a major redevelopment project aimed at improving learning conditions and expanding access to quality education.
The redevelopment, supported by Roofings Group, is expected to transform the school into a model government institution capable of accommodating up to 1,500 learners — more than double the current enrolment of about 700 pupils in the primary section and 76 children in the nursery section.
“Our commitment to this project is rooted in our belief that education is the foundation for a stronger and more prosperous society. We are proud to partner with KCCA in creating a learning environment that will inspire and empower generations of young learners,” he said.
KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi said the reconstruction project represents more than the development of physical infrastructure, describing it as part of a broader vision to create safe, inclusive, and inspiring spaces for children.
“This project reflects our broader vision of creating schools that are not merely centres of instruction, but safe, inclusive, and inspiring environments where children can learn, grow, and dream bigger,” he said.
Kigenyi revealed that KCCA had invested heavily in securing ownership of the school land following years of disputes, paving the way for the redevelopment project to proceed.
He also commended Roofings Group for partnering with the authority, saying the company’s contribution demonstrated leadership that extends beyond business interests.
“Your decision to invest in the future of our children speaks directly to nation-building. Education remains one of the greatest equalisers and one of the most powerful investments any society can make,” he said.
According to project details shared during the ceremony, the redevelopment will include a nursery and primary section, at least 14 classrooms, a sickbay, a library, a volleyball court, a kitchen, staff quarters, and a bakery intended to support skills development among learners.
Headteacher Florence Mabale described the groundbreaking ceremony as “a day of hope” for the school community.
“Since 2017, the school has operated under very difficult conditions after some buildings were demolished, making it challenging to provide a conducive learning environment for our learners,” she said.
The ceremony also featured a tree-planting exercise held in memory of the groundbreaking event, followed by a guided tour of the school premises, where officials inspected several ageing and dilapidated structures.
Kampala Capital City Authority oversees 79 government schools across Kampala, with at least 10 identified as urgently needing intervention, including Kasubi Family Primary School.
